Pub Scene

Crown Liquor Saloon, Belfast
Photographer: Helen Peyton

Imagine life without the pub. Where would we go to meet our friends, commemorate special occasions, flirt with prospective lovers, gossip, put the world to rights? Most societies have pub-like places for people to drink and socialise in, variously known as bars, hotels, cafés, brasseries, bodegas, lodges, inns, saloons, taverns, beer halls and shebeens.

Pub Scene celebrates the often exuberant, sometimes elegant, always singular, wow factor décor of public drinking places, whether they are big or small, traditional or contemporary. Pub Scene is a coffee table book of glossy colour photographs and informally written text that describes 31 of the world's best looking pubs, including British Victorian gin palaces, rococo Belgian café bars, Germany's beloved bierkellers, Australia's amazing beachside beer-gardens and America's notable brew-pubs.
